A delegation of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso represented our country at the FISU AMERICA University Games which took place between November 5th and the 14th.
Our tennis representatives, Patricio Gómez (Business Engineering) and Ignacio Soto (Design) won 2nd place in the men-doubles category. Student Patricio Gómez also won 2nd place in the mixed doubles category together with student from Universidad de Los Andes student, Constanza Millas and 4th place in men-singles. The Design student, Ignacio Soto, reached 8th place in men-singles.
Victoria García, DIDAF Sports Representation Coordinator, accompanied the students at the III FISU AMERICA GAMES 2024, which took place in Cali, Colombia.
“In this Pan-American university event we stood out in men’s tennis discipline, who were granted the spot due to winning 1 st place in the national university championship from the National University Sports Federation in 2023. The organization of the University Games was of the highest level, which allowed athletes to share enriching experiences, in a joyful environment along representatives of Colombia, Brasil, Costa Rica and México”, she added.
Adolfo Marín, Physical Education alumni, is the tennis coach and he highlighted the performance of the PUCV team. “There were five intense days of competition from Sunday to Thursday, with many games, but we won three medals for the University. This is the first time that we compete on tennis at the FISU Games. When I was a college student in 2015, we were national champions, but the FISU Games did not exist yet and we had the expectation of going to a South American competition. I was able to see this dream come true as a coach and we are very happy to represent our country and the University”, he explained.
Business Engineering student, Patricio Gómez, valued the silver medals won in mixed doubles. “We had a good performance, but exhaustion and the many games played against us. I did well in singles and won my two matches. I lost the semi-finals after more than 3 hours of playing, with the third set ending at 6-3. The final was a hard-fought match. The organization was very good, and the level was very competitive. We shared with chilean athletes of different sports, and we saw each one in their discipline. It was a very good and gratifying experience”, he expressed.
