The PUCV hits a milestone with the award of the first Millenium Nucleus in Social Sciences

Miércoles 8 de abril de 2026

The awarding of the “Millennium Nucleus for the Comprehensive Study of High Ability and its Diverse Contexts” (MICAI) project, within the context of the 2025 Millenium Nucleus in Social Sciences Contest, is an achievement of special institutional relevance. The initiative was selected among the proposals of greater excellence in the country and is the first participation of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) as a key actor in this program propelled by the National Research and Development Agency (ANID, for its name in spanish).

In a scenario where high abilities have been historically underserved in Chile, the MICAI nucleus situates itself in a critical and emergent line of investigation. Its interdisciplinary, inclusive and situated approach proposes to expand the traditional frameworks of its understanding, incorporating the social, cultural and territorial dimensions. In this way, the project not only addressed a gap in research, but also proposes new ways of understanding and addressing this phenomenon in the educational system.

The participation of the School of Pedagogy of the PUCV in MICAI takes a substantial and structural nature, with an active presence in its scientific conduction.

According to Sandra Catalán, Community Engagement Chief and faculty member, “the participation of the School of Pedagogy in scientific leadership projects like this can be interpreted as a sign of institutional maturity and consolidation of research capacity, especially in the field of inclusive education, and more specifically in the study of High Abilities, teacher education and pedagogical innovation. Recent evidence identifies these areas as a priority for the strengthening of contemporary educational systems”

“MICAI reflects an integrated understanding of academic work, where research, education and community engagement are articulated in a coherent way to create knowledge with a public purpose and territorial pertinence. This convergence strengthens the training of reflective future teachers, promotes pedagogical innovation and contributes to the development of more inclusive and sustainable educational communities”, the scholar added.

Interdisciplinary and Frontier Research

The MICAI nucleus intends to analyze identification processes, pedagogical strategies and educational trajectories of high ability students from an intersectional perspective that incorporates variables such as gender, sociocultural context and diversity.

“The chilean educational system faces the challenge of moving forward from a model centered in the exceptional identification towards a systematic educational policy that acknowledges high abilities as a dimension of diversity. This diagnosis shows the need to strengthen the timely identification processes, diversify pedagogical strategies and create institutional conditions that allow to develop the potential of all students, especially those that historically have been invisible”.

In addition, the proposal stands out for its interdisciplinary nature, articulating knowledges coming from education, psychology and public policy, along to a clear orientation towards its incidence in the educational system.

Inter-university networks and national project

Morever to the participation of the PUCV and the leadership of the USACH, MICAI considers the collaboration of other Institutions, being the Universidad de Talca one of them. This articulation results in an academic network that integrates different territories and perspectives, strengthening the project and broadening its scope of action.

Nelson Niño, secretary of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education at the PUCV, highlighted that “the richness of this nucleus lies precisely in its capacity of articulating various perspectives and multiple territories, which not only de-centralizes research, but also makes it more relevant, more situated, and therefore transforming of the educational system.”

Constant work between Institutions allows to build more complex analytical frameworks and create evidence with territorial pertinence. To this regard, Catalán added that “by integrating institutions and various territories. This articulation expands the scientific capabilities of the system, favors the generation of representative evidence of the national reality and contributes to public policies that are more equitable and sensitive to the particularities of each context”.

The incorporation of the PUCV to a Millenium Nucleus does not limit itself to an institutional achievement, but it also represents a breaking point in the way in which the University connects to frontier research. The protagonism of the School of Pedagogy accounts for an approach to situate education at the center of contemporary scientific debates, strengthening its strategic character within de context of academic development.

In this sense, MICAI contributes to re-define the rol of academia in the production of knowledge with social impact, promoting a research that dialogues with the challenges of the educational system, reasserting the idea of a university that is committed to its surroundings and the creation of tangible transformations.
