The english company dedicated to data analysis in higher education, Quacquarelli Symonds, recently delivered the results of the QS-2026 Ranking – a rating that places 1500 universities in 106 countries according to various aspects – in which the PUCV places sixth among national universities, closing the gap in relation to the previous edition by going from the 801-850 section to the 791-800 one.
In regard to this type of rankings, that measures, among other things, reputation, academic citations, international cooperation and sustainability, Development Vicerector, Jorge Mendoza, mentioned that “they are a way of showing our institutional developments and it’s clear that these indicators are associated to various perspectives on the work of universities”.
Mendoza added that “without a doubt, during the last years, our university has demonstrated its institutional capabilities and its leadership at the national level, and this year in particular, we have improved our performance on the indicator associated to citations in our researchers’ publications, an aspect we have been working at the institutional level, incorporating new scholars, developing new lines of research and strengthening research areas that are key to our institution”.
SCImago RANKING
The good results obtained in the QS ranking join the recent measuring carried out by SCImago, a study based in Spain. In its last version, the PUCV reached the fourth place at the national level in the areas of research and social impact, also standing out in the Innovation aspect. In the Latin American context, our university placed at number 37.
“The quality of the work of our researchers, their national and international networks, added to the effort of our professionals in managing the VINCI, allow us to have indicators that are externally acknowledged, joining this outstanding groups. I would also like to highlight the fact that innovation is in rapid development and allows us, along with research, to be a model to other institutions”, commented Luis Mercado, Vicerector of Research, Creation and Innovation (VINCI).
The SCImago ranking analyzes a total universe of more than five thousand higher education institutions, whose performance is measured on research (50% of the indicator), Innovation (30%) and Social Impact (20%), quantified by the visibility on the Institutional website. The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso is placed at number 37 in Latin America, and the fourth university at the national level.
The study generates classifications by different knowledge areas (19 in total), where the PUCV stands out in seven categories at the national level, placing third in Psychology, Medicine, Mathematics, and Arts and Humanities. In the same way, it appears in fourth place in Social Sciences and in fifth place in Computer Science, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology.
